STRATFORD – Stratford won nine individual titles and rolled to the team championship at the 2017 Marawood Conference Wrestling Tournament.

The Tigers compiled 304.5 points, well ahead of Pittsville (162) and Athens (161). Auburndale finished sixth with 108 points.

The conference championship is Stratford’s fourth in a row.

Stratford senior Kamren Bornbach was named Wrestler of the Year after winning his fourth conference title. He won by technical fall over Dakota Venzke of Athens 18-2 in the 220-pound championship match and improve to 28-1 this season.

Manny Drexler (106), Max Schwabe (113), A.J. Schoenfuss (126), Jake Drexler (138), Jeremy Schoenherr (145), Mason Kauffman (152), David Marquardt (170), and Jon Aguirre (285) also won individual conference titles for Stratford.

Aguirre beat Tyson Sommers of Athens, who is ranked second in the state at 285 pounds, 5-3 in double overtime. Aguirre (24-8) has vaulted to sixth in the state 285-pound rankings in Division 3.

Manny Drexler, and Jake Drexler repeated as conference champions, and A.J. Schoenfuss, Schoenherr and Kauffman all won their third-straight Marawood title.

Trevor Dennee (160) and Aiden Hoffman (195) each finished second for the Tigers.

“I was very pleased with how are kids performed,” Stratford coach Joe Schwabe said. “It was great that all 14 wrestlers placed high with 11 making the finals, two taking third and on in fourth. The guys came out aggressive and went after pins. It was nice that four seniors that wrestled all left with titles.

“Now we need to fine-tune a few things and get re-charged for the regionals in two weeks hosted by Athens. We are hoping that will be another positive, fan-engaged atmosphere.”

Isaiah Haensohrl (132) and Keller Wolfe (170) both took second for Auburndale.
