LA CROSSE – The Stratford boys track team picked up a medal and the girls team’s lone entry qualified for the finals in their Division 3 event Friday at the WIAA State Track and Field Championships at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse.

Matt Zuelke competed in the 1,600-meter finals for the Tigers, finishing sixth in the 1,600 meters for the second year in a row. The junior ran the race in a time of 4 minutes, 32.60 seconds to earn a sixth-place medal. D.T. McDonald of Oshkosh Lourdes won the race in 4:23.44.

The girls 800 relay team of Alyssa Fischer, Karissa Kaiser, Josie Kolbeck and Toshia Spindler qualified ninth for the 10-team race on Saturday with a time of 1:51.62, just 5.43 seconds off the first-place qualifier.

Stratford’s other individual qualifiers came up empty on Friday.

Andre Tackes qualified 14th in the 100-meter preliminaries, running in 11.65 seconds, and Ben Robers, who was seeded second in the Division 3 pole vault, finished tied for sixth with a vault of 12 feet, 6 inches. He finished ninth as a result of the number of attempts he used to get his best vault.

The Stratford boys 3,200 relay team of Zuelke, Steve Wenzel, Tylyn Hoover and Mark Marquardt will run in the Division 3 finals – the first event of the day Saturday when the meet starts at 10:30 a.m.

Columbus’ lone entry bounced

The Columbus Catholic boys 400 relay team of seniors Greg Wunrow and Dodge Langreck, and sophomores Austin Mahoney and Beom Koh finished 15th among the 16 teams trying to qualify for Saturday’s 10-team final. The Dons’ relay finished the race in a time of 45.73 seconds, only 0.11 of second off their sectional time.

Auburndale’s Harrison 7th in girls 3,200

Auburndale sophomore Danica Harrison just missed earning a medal in the 3,200 meters. She was seeded 12th after running a sectional time of 12:13.60, but improved that by nearly 30 seconds, taking seventh in the Division 3 finals with a time of 11:44.16.

Harrison will race in the 1,600 meters and teammate Kelly Tomfohrde will take part in the Division 3 pole vault on Saturday.

Spencer entrants compete Saturday

Spencer boys high jumper Tyler Kolstad, girls triple jumper Tara Matter and girls discus thrower Marcie Hebert will compete in their Division 3 field events on Saturday.

Hebert and Kolstad will compete in the first group of the day, starting at 10:30 a.m. Matter’s triple jump group will start after the completion of the Division 2 girls triple jump sometime in the early afternoon.
