VERONA – Marshfield senior Mike Field had been hot lately, shooting two of his lowest rounds of his career in recent weeks, including an even par 72 at the Division 1 sectional last week at his home course of Riveredge Golf Course.

However, Field found the course at University Ridge Golf Club a little more difficult to navigate Monday, shooting an opening-round 88 in the Division 1 portion of the WIAA Boys Golf Championships.

Field is in a three-way tie for 83rd place among the 104-player field. He will play his second and final round of the tournament Tuesday afternoon.

Field started on the back nine and triple bogeyed the par-4 10th hole. He followed with his only birdie of the day on No. 11, but double bogeyed No. 12 and never recovered. Field had two bogeys and two double bogeys on the final four holes of the opening nine to finish with a 46. On his second nine, the front side, Field had four pars, four bogeys and finished with a double bogey on the par-5 ninth hole to shoot a 42 and a total round of 88.

John Gulbert of Racine Case shot even par 72 and holds a one shot lead over Mitch Johnson and Mike Schiling of Middleton, who both shot 73. Brady Paschke of Green Bay Southwest is two back after firing a 74 on the par-72, 6,477-yard layout.

Middleton leads the team standings after shooting a combined score of 304, one shot better than Milwaukee Marquette and two shots ahead of three-time defending champion Hartland Arrowhead.
