MARSHFIELD – Marshfield High School football coach Dennis Goettl said as many as four Tigers seniors will play college football next fall.

Cale Schliesman, a 6-foot-6, 275-pound offensive tackle, signed with Winona State (Minn.) University, an NCAA Division II school.

Schliesman, a second-team all-Wisconsin Valley Conference pick last season, is one of six offensive linemen signed by Winona State. The Warriors finished 7-4 in 2009.

Defensive back Joel Franseen will be attending the University of Wisconsin-Platteville, and quarterback/running back Paul Schecklman will play at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse, Goettl said.

Franseen was a first-team all-Wisconsin Valley choice last season.

Schecklman was seventh in the conference with 273 rushing yards and scored three touchdowns as he was used mainly as a running back and served as a backup quarterback.

Goettl said wide receiver Ben Johnson, who had 10 catches for 203 yards in Valley games last season, also is considering playing at UW-La Crosse.

Former Tigers Ben Sturomski, Chris Follen, Nic Lisiecki and Alex Maxinoski play at UW-La Crosse.

“This is an exciting time for our athletes, it’s the next step in their journey of playing football,” Goettl said. “It is something that each of the guys are looking forward to, without a doubt.

“We as a staff can only hope we have given them enough tools and knowledge to be able to adapt to the college game. I’m really excited for each of our guys that are taking the next step. I’m sure they will do just fine.”
