WAUSAU – The Marshfield boys soccer team dropped its Wisconsin Valley Conference opener and lost its first game of the season on Tuesday, losing 2-1 to Wausau West.

Following a scoreless first half, Wausau West scored two unanswered goals. Elliott Marquardt scored at the 41:34 mark on an assist from Matt Bautch, and Bautch scored at the 63-minute mark to give the Warriors a 2-0 lead.

Marshfield scored at the 68-minute mark on a goal by Colin Telin, but couldn’t tie the game during the final 12 minutes. The Tigers fall to 1-1-2 on the season.

“We played a very good team and played very well at times,” Marshfield coach Ron Todyrk said. “Our youth showed at times. We had a few letdowns at times, and being an upperclassmen team, West took advantage of that.”

Marshfield is back at home Thursday for a game at 5 p.m. at Griese Park against Wausau East.
