CHIPPEWA FALLS – The Auburndale football team came so close to picking up another huge early-season Marawood Conferene win.

A week after the Apaches throttled Marathon, they dropped a narrow 24-22 decision at Chippewa Falls McDonell on Friday, falling to 1-2 overall and in the Marawood.

McDonell quarterback Kyle Cody didn’t have a very efficient game, but he made enough big plays to lead the Macks.

Cody completed just 9 of 25 passes but three three touchdowns in the second half to help McDonell rally for the narrow win.

McDonell remains unbeaten, improving to 3-0 overall and in the Marawood Conference.

Auburndale took an 8-0 lead into halftime after quarterback C.J. Castellano ran in from 6 yards out and Kyle Willfahrt added a two-point conversion with 9:46 to go in the second quarter.

Cody got the Macks on the board with a 23-yard touchdown pass to Austin Hiess and pulled them ahead on a 6-yard scoring strike to Clint Abramczak with 1:19 to go in the third quarter. McDonell missed both two-point conversion attempts, but led 12-8 heading into the fourth.

On McDonell’s next possession, it was Cody to Abramczak again, this time on a 54-yard touchdown pass, to push the Macks lead to 18-8.

Willfahrt, who had his second straight 200-yard plus rushing game this season, broke free on a 63-yard touchdown run just 1:48 into the final quarter to get the Apaches back within a few points at 18-14. Willfahrt ran for 215 yards on 25 carries.

McDonell quickly responded when Luke Ryba ripped off a 36-yard touchdown run following a long kickoff return, and took control at 24-14.

Auburndale had a touchdown called back due to a penalty and later was stuffed on fourth down to turn it over. The Apaches eventually scored again – on a 15-yard run by Castellano – but it came with only four seconds left in the game.

Kyle Greunke added 53 yards on the ground for Auburndale, which was bitten by three turnovers.

Ryba had 109 yards on 20 carries for the Macks.

Auburndale plays at 3-0 Edgar next Friday, while McDonell plays at Pittsville.
