Strong start pushes Eau Claire Memorial past Marshfield boys basketball

MARSHFIELD – Eau Claire Memorial scored the first eight points of the game and never trailed, beating Marshfield 55-48 in a nonconference boys basketball game Tuesday night at Marshfield High School.

A mistake in the Marshfield lineup earned a technical foul. Will Boser made two free throws before the game even started, and the Old Abes were off and running.

After a 3-pointer from Matt Donovan ended the Memorial run, the Old Abes scored 10 straight to take a commanding 18-3 lead 7½ minutes in. The Tigers never recovered.

Marshfield cut it to 27-20 after Donovan’s second 3-pointer, but the Old Abes (2-2) closed the half on a 6-2 run to take a 33-22 lead into intermission.

Back-to-back baskets by Moser pushed Memorial’s lead to 44-26 with 11 minutes to go before Marshfield made one final run.

Chase Hinson had a three-point play, Carson Kvernen made two of his five 3-pointers, and Sam Roherty had a three-point play to bring the Tigers to within seven at 51-44 with 3:12 left in th3e game.

Marshfield wouldn’t make another basket from the floor. Two free throws by Donovan cut it to five with 43 seconds left and Memorial made four free throws to close out the win.

Kvernen finished with a team-high 16 points for Marshfield, draining 5 of 6 from 3-point range. Donovan added 10 points.

Boser scored 18 points and Mason Stoik added 11 for Memorial.

Marshfield (1-3) plays at Chippewa Falls on Wednesday.
