Marshfield cross country sending three to state meet after high finishes at WIAA Division 1 sectional

STEVENS POINT – Marshfield will three athletes at next week’s state meet after earning top spots at the WIAA Division 1 cross country sectional Saturday at Standing Rocks Park.

The Stevens Point boys had the second- through fifth-place finishers to roll to the team title with 25 points and earn a spot at the WIAA State Cross Country Championships at Ridges Golf Course in Wisconsin Rapids next Saturday, Oct. 30.

The top two teams and top five individuals not on those teams qualify for the state meet.

The Marshfield boys took two of those spots as Henry Hoerneman finished seventh in 16:52.1 and Graham Lonsdale was 12th in 17:15.6.

Neenah finished second in the team standings with 69 points to earn the other state berth, with Marshfield third with 93 and Wisconsin Rapids seventh with 215.

Austin Henderson of Neenah won the boys race in 15:43.0, with Stevens Point earning the next four spots – Aloysius Franzen was second in 16:26.8, Bode Erickson third in 16:35.1, James Jacobs fourth in 16:40.0, and Zach Scharbarth fifth in 16:42.2. Tate Bruckhart was 11th in 17:12.5 to round out the Panthers’ scoring runners.

Neenah won the girls team standings with 41 points and Appleton North was second with 71 to earn the two team state meet berths. Wisconsin Rapids was third with 97, Stevens Point fifth with 153, and Marshfield ninth with 215.

Sara Mlodik of D.C. Everest won the girls race in 19:35.8, 18 seconds ahead of Neenah’s Rachel Dietrich.

Marshfield senior Eliana Kanitz also earned a spot at state, becoming the first girl in program history to accomplish the feat all four seasons in her career. She finished seventh in 20:05.4.

The Division 1 boys race will kick off the state meet next Saturday at noon. The Division 1 girls will run at 1:45 p.m.
