SUN PRAIRIE – The Marshfield volleyball team won two of three matches to finish third at the two-day Sun Prairie East Invitational that concluded Saturday.

After going 4-0 in pool play on Friday, Marshfield won its quarterfinal match over De Pere 25-15, 25-23, before losing in the semifinals to Luxemburg-Casco in a hard-fought 25-21, 19-25, 15-8 match. The Tigers rebounded to win the third-place match over DeForest, 25-10, 25-20.

Setter Reinya Balderson had 62 assists and eight service aces in the two matches. Abby Ongna had a team-high 24 kills, Caitlyn Persteiner added 22 kills, Elise Uphoff had 27 digs, and Grace Taylor had 20 digs and five aces for Marshfield.

“I am so proud of how well this team came in and played every match this weekend,” Marshfield coach Dawn Sadowska said. “This is our best finish in this tournament ever. With our only loss coming to last year’s Division 2 champions, we are definitely headed in the right direction. Most importantly, lots of kids are contributing, and we are having lots of fun.”

Marshfield starts its Wisconsin Valley Conference season at home Thursday against Stevens Point.
