Columbus Catholic boys basketball holds off Port Edwards

WISCONSIN RAPIDS – Four Columbus Catholic players scored in double figures as the Dons boys basketball team held off Port Edwards to win 80-74 in a semifinal of the Cranberry Classic on Friday night at Assumption High School.

Charlie Moore drilled five 3-pointers and scored a team-high 21 points, with Emmitt Konieczny kicking in 20 points on the strength of 7-for-7 free throw shooting, Blake Jakobi chipped in 18 points and Lucas Kreklau added 11 points for Columbus Catholic, which was playing its season opener.

The Dons led 43-29 at halftime before Port Edwards made it interesting in the second half, but fell by four.

Timmy Tranel had 22 points and Nathan Gibbs scored 16 for Port Edwards (0-1), which made 16 3-pointers but was just 4-for-13 at the free throw line in the loss.

Port Edwards will play Nekoosa at 6:15 p.m. in the consolation game and Columbus Catholic will take on Wisconsin Rapids Assumption for the tournament championship at 8 p.m. Saturday.
