EDGAR – Stratford had three champions and 10 individual champions as it won the team title at the WIAA Division 3 wrestling regional on Saturday at Edgar High School.
Stratford garnered 245 points to win the regional team title, with Glenwood City (232.5) holding off Cadott (231) for second. Stratford and Glenwood City will compete at the WIAA Team Sectional on Tuesday at Cadott. Stratford will take on Clear Lake, and Glenwood City will battle Cumberland in semifinal duals, with the winners squaring off for a sectional championship and a berth in the WIAA State Team Tournament in Madison on March 4.
The top four finishers in each weight class at the regional qualify for the D-3 individual sectional next Saturday, Feb. 18, back at Edgar High School. The top three finishers in each weight class at the sectional earn spots at the WIAA State Individual Wrestling Tournament at the Kohl Center in Madison on Feb. 23-25.
Stratford had 10 wrestlers qualify for the individual sectional, while Auburndale, which finished fifth in the team standings, will have seven moving on, including two regional champs.
Trenton Cournoyer (35-6), Carter Lueck (36-6) and Jackson Ormond (38-1) each won individual titles for Stratford.
Cournoyer defeated James Knight of Glenwood City 6-0 to win the 120-pound title; Lueck pinned Cole Steinmeyer of Spring Valley/Elmwood in 47 seconds to take the 170-pound championship; and Ormond continued his strong season with a 3-2 overtime win over Dawson Webster of Cadott in the 182-pound final.
Colton Weiler (47-4) won the 138-pound championship with a pin of Nick Fasbender of Cadott in 45 seconds, and Sloan Welch (46-2) earned the 220-pound title with a 5-0 win over Cadott’s Axel Tegels for Auburndale.
Also moving on to sectionals for the Tigers are Ryan Becker (34-11 at 145) and Kaleb Krummel (27-10 at 152) after runner-up finishes; third-place finishers Colin Cournoyer (33-9) at 106 and Mathias Kaiser (19-20) at 126; and Lucas Forrest (12-12 at 113), Jack Tubbs (10-8 at 160) and Alex Mueller (12-11 at 195), who each took fourth place for Stratford.
In addition to the two champions, Auburndale had five other sectional qualifiers. Derek Godard (43-8) finished second at 106 pounds, losing in the finals to undefeated Blake Underwood (42-0) of Marathon, 8-4.
Also earning spots for Auburndale were Zade Grassel (33-15 at 120) and Adam Dorshorst (28-15 at 195), who each placed third, and fourth-place finishers Trevor Trowbridge (14-14 at 126) and Wyatt Malsin (25-19 at 145).
