Columbus Catholic girls basketball falls to Athens in WIAA Division 5 regional semifinal

ATHENS – Athens held Marshfield Columbus Catholic to just three made baskets and seven points in the first half to open up a huge lead and ended the Dons’ season with a 50-31 win in a WIAA Division 5 girls basketball regional semifinal Friday night at Athens High School.

Athens led 21-7 at halftime and were able to maintain its double-digit lead to earn the victory. The No. 3 seed Bluejays (23-3) move on to a D-5 regional final at No. 2 seed Edgar (20-5) on Saturday at 7 p.m.

Hailey Zimmermann and Jenna Kibbel each scored eight points to lead Columbus Catholic, which finishes its season with a 15-11 record.

Addison Lavicka had 14 points and Celina Ellenbecker hit a pair of 3-pointers and added 10 points for Athens.
