Northland Lutheran uses free-throw edge to knock off Stratford boys basketball

STRATFORD – Northland Lutheran built an early lead and Stratford couldn’t overcome it as the Wildcats posted a 56-46 win in a Marawood Conference South Division boys basketball game Thursday night at Stratford High School.

The Wildcats built a 32-24 lead by halftime. Stratford cut it to seven at the end of the third quarter but couldn’t close the gap in the fourth.

Northland Lutheran made 16 of 24 free throws, while Stratford was just 3 of 9 at the line and 20 of 53 from the field in the loss.

Troy Mengel had 12 points and seven rebounds, and Nolan Bargender had 11 points and eight rebounds for Stratford, which falls 2-3 and 1-2 in the Marawood South.

Brett Boeck led Northland Lutheran (2-2, 1-2 Marawood South) with 14 points.

Stratford plays at Edgar on Monday.
