MARSHFIELD – For the second time in two Wisconsin Valley Conference dual meets, the difference between winning and losing came down to pulling out one more victory for the Marshfield wrestling team.
Unfortunately for the Tigers, they found themselves on the losing end again.
Marshfield won the first three matches of the dual but couldn’t hold on, losing 35-30 to the Bluejays on Thursday night at Marshfield High School.
Marshfield had to forfeit at 112 pounds, which provided the difference.
“We’re looking to get over this hump of losing these close duals,” Marshfield coach Don Lang said. “In both duals against Wausau West and Merrill we are within one match away of pulling out the wins.”
Kyler Strobel started the match with a pin of Justin Bloch in 1:43 in the 152-pound match.
Brad Dolezal won by major decision at 160 and Justin Sternweis earned an 8-3 win at 171 to give Marshfield a 13-0 lead. Merrill responded with six wins in a row, three by pin and another by major decision, and the Tigers couldn’t recover.
Brett Pernsteiner (125) and Daniel Barton (135) won decisions, Torin Boernke had a technical fall victory at 140 and Josh Shupe closed the match with a pin at 145 for Marshfield.
The Tigers travel to the Battle of the Fox Duals in Kimberly this Saturday.
