Iola-Scandinavia softball team voted Awards ‘n’ More June High School Athletes of the Month

The Iola-Scandinavia softball team has been voted the Awards ‘n’ More High School Athletes of the Month for June.

MarshfieldAreaSports.com & Zaleski Sports are co-sponsors of the award for the 2022-23 school year. The Awards ‘n’ More High School Athlete of the Year, for both male and female athletes, will be announced July 12.

Varsity athletes from the following high schools are eligible to be nominated for the award: Abbotsford, Amherst, Athens, Assumption, Auburndale, Colby, Columbus Catholic, D.C. Everest, Edgar, Granton, Greenwood, Iola-Scandinavia, Loyal, Marshfield, Marathon, Mosinee, Neillsville, Newman Catholic, Pacelli, Pittsville, Port Edwards, Rosholt, Spencer, Stratford, Stevens Point, Wild Rose, Wisconsin Rapids Lincoln and Wittenberg-Birnamwood.

The 11 teams from Central Wisconsin that won sectional titles in the spring sports season were nominated for the award. Iola-Scandinavia softball received 508 of the nearly 1,200 votes cast during voting from June 30-July 7 at MarshfieldAreaSports.com.

Other nominees for the June award were: the Marshfield girls track team, the Stratford softball team, the Stratford boys track team, the Edgar baseball team, the Stevens Point boys track team, the Stevens Point baseball team, the Stevens Point Pacelli softball team, the Wisconsin Rapids Assumption softball team, the Neillsville boys golf team, and the Wausau Newman Catholic boys golf team.

Iola-Scandinavia earned a spot in the WIAA State Softball Tournament with a 3-2 win in the Division 4 Sectional 2 championship game over No. 1 seed Algoma. The Thunderbirds went on to win their first-ever state title with a 10-6 victory over Waterloo in the D-4 state tournament championship game on June 10 in Madison.

Other winners of the award during the 2022-23 school sports year include: Marshfield volleyball player Reinya Balderson (August), Marshfield football player Trevor Foemmel (September), Stratford football player Braeden Schueller (October), Marshfield girls swimmer Faith Risa (November), Marshfield wrestler Hoyt Blaskowski (December), Stratford wrestler Jackson Ormond (January), Marshfield boys swimmer Kyle Berres (February), Marshfield softball player Katelyn Sternweis (March), Stevens Point Pacelli softball player Hannah Trzinski (April) and Marshfield track athlete Michaela Dick (May).
