PLOVER – Sloan Welch and Emmitt Konieczny combined on a five-hit shutout as Marshfield kept its season alive with a 1-0 win over Stevens Point in an elimination game at the Class AAA Region 2 American Legion Baseball Tournament on Thursday afternoon at Memorial Field.
Brock Bennington hit his ninth home run of the season in the bottom of the first for Marshfield, and Welch and Konieczny did the rest.
Welch allowed four hits in 6 1/3 innings before Konieczny entered. He struck out the first batter he faced before a single gave Stevens Point runners on first and third with two out. Konieczny earned another strikeout to secure the win for the Blue Devils (5-21).
Marshfield was held to just three hits by Stevens Point’s Deacan Koback, who struck out eight in a complete-game effort, but the Sixers couldn’t muster any offense and finish their 2022 campaign with a 13-14 record.
Marshfield stays alive in the double-elimination tournament and will play D.C. Everest at 1 p.m. Friday in another elimination game. The tournament, with a berth in next week’s Class AAA state tournament in Marinette on the line, runs through Saturday.
