MARSHFIELD – Menomonie scored less than 3 minutes into the game and Marshfield never recovered, dropping a nonconference girls hockey game to the Indians 3-1 on Tuesday night at the Marshfield Youth Ice Recreation Center.

Chandler Roy-Peterson scored with 1:08 left in the first period for Marshfield, cutting Menomonie’s lead to 2-1. Despite controlling the puck for most of the second period, and having a two-minute stretch of 5-on-3 hockey in the third period, the Tigers couldn’t muster anything else against Menomonie goalie Katelyn Halama.

The Tigers (8-5-1) outshot Menomonie an astonishing 46-18, but could only find the net once.

“I think we came out slow and played down to their level and let it get away frmo us,” Marshfield coach Nate Sparbel said. “The ladies know what they did wrong, there’s no reason to harp on them about it.”

Whitney Krueger scored 2:37 into the game and Shauna Bollinger added another for the Indians at the 10:02 mark to give them a 2-0 lead.

Naomi Crump assisted on Roy-Peterson’s goal at the 15:52 mark to cut the Tigers’ deficit in half.

Menomonie (5-9-1) went up 3-1 on Taylor Rudiger’s goal 3:15 into the second period to complete the scoring.

Goalie Ashley Bauer saved seven shots in the third period to keep Marshfield within striking distance, but the Tigers couldn’t slip one past Halama, who finished with 45 saves.

“We didn’t have a lot of good quality shots, but nonetheless their goaltender is outstanding and I give her props for it,” Sparbel said.

Marshfield has five regular-season games left before entering the WIAA playoffs, and Sparbel said there are few things that need to be cleaned up.

“A lot of shooting drills, working hard and beating the other team to the puck,” Sparbel said. “If we would have played in the first two periods like we did in the third period, it would have been a different story and the girls know that.”
