STRATFORD – It’s no secret that the Edgar football team likes to turn to its running game, and in that, senior running back Karter Butt.

The Wildcats turned to Butt time and again, and Stratford was unable to stop him. Butt racked up 147 yards rushing on 32 carries and scored five touchdowns, four in a 26-point second quarter, as Edgar cruised to a 40-6 nonconference victory Friday night at Tiger Stadium.

Edgar drove to the Stratford 18 on the opening drive of the game before fumbling and Caleb Wrensch recovered for the Tigers. That would be the only time Edgar would be stopped.

Butt carried the ball on seven of eight plays on the Wildcats’ next drive, which ended in a 3-yard touchdown run.

Stratford quickly countered, going 56 yards in just five plays as Koehler Kilty carried three times for 54 yards and Jack Tubbs finished off the drive with a 1-yard touchdown run to tie the game at 6-6.

From there, it was all Edgar. Butt scored on touchdown runs of 7 and 3 yards to cap two long drives, and after a high snap on a punt attempt in the final minute was recovered by Edgar at the 1, Butt plowed in with 29 seconds left in the half, giving the Wildcats a 26-6 lead heading into halftime.

Stratford’s last chance to get back in the game ended on its first drive of the second half. After running 10 plays to get to the Edgar 9, the drive ended on downs.

The Wildcats took advantage of a roughing the kicker penalty on fourth down and Butt ended up finding the end zone again, this time from 21 yards out.

Kohlbe Weisenberger added a 36-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter to finish off the scoring for Edgar (1-1).

Edgar ended up with 252 rushing yards and outgained Stratford 346-125 in the win.

Stratford (1-1) will open its Central Wisconsin Conference Large Division schedule at Amherst next Friday, Sept. 1. Edgar opens its Marawood Conference season with a crossover game with CWC Small opponent Stevens Point Pacelli on Sept. 1.
