MARSHFIELD – The Columbus Catholic girls basketball team had a dominating first half and had to hold off a late rally to defeat Rib Lake 54-51 in the season-opener for both teams on Tuesday night at Columbus Catholic High School.

The Dons raced out to a 34-9 lead by halftime, but the game was far from over as Rib Lake responded in kind in the second. Rib Lake poured in 42 second-half points, more than double of Columbus Catholic’s total, but came up three points short of the comeback.

Courtney Sommer and Maggie Callaghan each had 14 points to lead Columbus Catholic.

Tessa Weik had a game-high 18 points for Rib Lake.

Columbus Catholic will be back in action at the Cranberry Classic at Wisconsin Rapids Assumption on Nov. 24-25.
