ATHENS – Athens made eight of 12 free throws in overtime to hold off Stratford 47-40 in a Marawood Conference girls basketball crossover game Friday night at Athens High School.

The Tigers came back from a five-point halftime deficit to force overtime, but only made one shot in the extra period – a 3-pointer by Kayla Casperson – and Athens was able to put the game away at the free throw line.

Overall, Athens was 18-for-34 free throws, while Stratford made only four of 15 attempts at the charity stripe.

Casperson scored 10 points, and Emily Zuelke had nine points and eight rebounds for Stratford, which drops to 3-2 overall and 3-1 in the Marawood Conference South Division.

Sophia Coker was 8-for-11 at the free throw line and had a game-high 14 points for Athens (4-4, 4-1 Marawood North).

Stratford’s next game is Monday at Spencer in a nonconference tilt. Game time is 7:15 p.m.
