MARATHON – Marathon ended Stratford’s run of 10-straight conference titles by taking first place at the 2024 Marawood Conference Wrestling Tournament on Saturday at Phillips High School.
Marathon had four individual championships and finished with 239 points, 12 more than Stratford. Auburndale was third with 176.5.
Stratford had won each of the nine previous conference tournaments dating back to 2014. There was no tournament in 2021, in which Stratford was the regular-season champion.
Auburndale won three individual titles. Derek Godard had a pin in the 113-pound finals, Zade Grassel won the 126-pound title with a 12-5 win over Trenton Cournoyer of Stratford, and Colton Weiler nailed down the championship at 144 with a 28-13 technical fall victory over Marathon’s Tate Sonnentag.
Stratford also won three weight class titles. Colin Cournoyer was victorious at 120 pounds, pinning Marathon’s Cale Quaintance in 2:29 in the championship match, Carter Lueck pinned Ayron Deleasky of Phillips in 1:41, and Walker Weis won the 215-pound final with a pin in 3:41 of Auburndale’s Greg Brummund.
Marathon’s four champions were Blake Underwood (106), Swayne Stencil (132), Dylan Dodson (138) and Grant Salber (157).
Stratford and Marathon will be among the teams competing at a WIAA Division 3 regional at Auburndale on Feb. 10.
