AUBURNDALE – Liz Breu scored 11 points and Lindsay Gotz scored six of her nine points in the pivotal fourth quarter to lead the Auburndale girls basketball team to a 37-32 win in Marawood Conference South Division action Tuesday at Auburndale High School.

The victory avenges an earlier season loss – 47-44 on Dec. 18 – to Edgar and moves the Apaches into sole possession of third place in the Marawood South. It is Auburndale’s fourth straight win and improves its record to 6-1 in its last seven games.

“The girls gave a great effort all night,” Auburndale coach Corey Manlick said.

Auburndale jumped out to an 11-4 lead after the first quarter thanks to five points by Breu and a 3-pointer by Sam Karl.

The Wildcats crawled back into it with an 11-8 run in the second quarter as Tessa Thurs hit four straight free throws and scored six of her eight points.

Auburndale led 25-21 after the third quarter and held on in the fourth as Gotz hit three baskets to keep Edgar at bay.

The Apaches return to action Friday when they host first-place Wisconsin Rapids Assumption (15-1, 9-1 Marawood South). The Royals beat Auburndale in Wisconsin Rapids 40-26 on Dec. 22.
