Auburndale’s Nikolay, Stratford’s Newburry named to all-Marawood South first team

Auburndale’s Garrett Nikolay and Stratford’s Chris Newburry were named to the all-Marawood Conference South Division boys basketball first-team as voted on by the conference coaches.

Nikolay led the Marawood South in free-throw shooting at 87.5 percent and ranked ninth in the conference in scoring, leading Auburndale at 11.7 points a game. His 32 3-pointers made and 39 steals were also tops for the Apaches.

Newburry finished second in the conference in free-throw shooting at 82.1 percent and ranked fourth in the conference in scoring at 13.6 points a game. He also ranked third in rebounding, leading the Tigers with 7.3 boards a game. Newburry also lit it up from deep, hitting 42.1 percent (28 of 68) from 3-point range.

Cody Hanke of Marathon was named South Division player of the year after leading the conference in scoring (19 points a game) and finishing second in rebounding (9.0 a game).

Hanke, Edgar’s Justin Sinz and Wausau Newman Catholic’s Jake Wolf were unanimous first-team selectiobns.

Auburndale’s Tyler Pankratz and C.J. Castellano, and Stratford’s Jesse Adams and Josh Franklin were honorable mention picks.
