Auburndale boys basketball reaches sectionals with win over Marathon in WIAA Division 4 regional final

AUBURNDALE – Blake Anderson scored 21 points and Austin Hawkins added 18 to lead the Auburndale boys basketball team to its third victory of the season over Marathon, a 51-46 win in a WIAA Division 4 regional final Saturday night at Auburndale High School.

Auburndale (23-1) moves on to a Division 4 sectional semifinal Thursday against Hurley (14-10) at Wausau East High School. Game time is 7 p.m. The winner moves on to a sectional final against either Unity or Colfax on March 2 at the University of Wisconsin-Stout in Menomonie.

Marathon led 26-25 at halftime and the game remained close throughout, with the Apaches taking a 42-41 lead into the fourth.

Auburndale outscored the Raiders (19-5) 9-5 in the final period.

Hawkins made 9 of 15 shots from the field and had seven rebounds for the Apaches. Anderson was 7 of 14, hitting four 3-pointers.

Overall, Auburndale was 21 of 39 from the field, while Marathon was just 21 of 52.
