AUBURNDALE – Wausau Newman Catholic scored seven times in the final two innings to edge Auburndale 8-5 in the Marawood Conference South Division softball opener for both teams.

Auburndale led 3-1 entering the sixth when Newman took advantage of some poor defense by the Apaches to score four times. Newman added three more in the seventh before the Apaches tried to rally, scoring twice.

“Errors on defense really hurt us in the sixth inning to let Newman take the lead,” Auburndale coach Dawn Urban said. “We had a small seventh-inning comeback, but it wasn’t enough.”

Kayleigh Kundinger and Kelli Isaacson each went 3-for-4, and Heather Nigh was 2-for-3 for Auburndale, which pounded out 11 hits in all. Isaacson added three RBIs and Kari Willhahrt had two RBIs.

Kim Masephol struck out three and walked nine in 6 2/3 innings on the mound for the Apaches. She allowed all eight runs, five of which were earned.

Auburndale plays a nonconference game at Abbotsford on Friday.
