BLACK RIVER FALLS – Marshfield rallied by scoring five runs with two outs in the top of the sixth inning to beat Black River Falls 8-4 in a nonconference softball game Friday.

Marshfield, playing for the first time after wrapping up a four-game trip to DisneyWorld in Florida last Friday, improves to 3-2 this season. Black River Falls drops to 0-2.

Marshfield trailed 4-3 before finally getting to Black River Falls starter Jordy Hilts.

A single and an error put two runners on before Andie Varsho ripped a two-out RBI single to tie the game 4-4.

Sara Sturomski drew a walk and Taylor Varsho reached on a dropped fly ball that scored the go-ahead run. Raelynn Wingert added a two-RBI single to wrap up the scoring.

“We started out kind of slow with a couple of errors that gave them a couple of their runs,” Marshfield coach Mike Voss said. “In the sixth inning we finally had some nice at-bats. Andie’s hit with two outs got us going a bit and Sturomski’s walk was a really good at-bat.

“Wingert’s single that scored two runs was a key. That put us up four runs and helped our confidence defensively and with Rhiannon’s (Baierl) pitching.”

Baierl settled down after allowing four runs over the first three innings. She threw four shutout innings to finish off the game and ended with two strikeouts and five walks.

Andie Varsho finished 3-for-4 with a double and two RBIs, and Raelynn Wingert was 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs for Marshfield.

Marshfield returns to action next Saturday, April 17, when it hosts its annual Marshfield Tournament. The Tigers play La Crosse Logan at 2 p.m. at the Central Wisconsin Fairgrounds.
