MARSHFIELD – Katelyn Krug scored the game winning 1:33 into the second overtime to lift Rhinelander to a 3-2 win over Marshfield in Wisconsin Valley Conference girls soccer action Thursday at Griese Park.

Allison Gruen scored both of Marshfield’s goals, both on assists from Emily Brix.

Gruen scored at the 31:40 mark off a centering pass from Brix, but Rhinelander responded when Claire Tracy connected at the 35:23 mark, and the game was tied 1-1 heading into halftime.

Rhinelander took the lead after a corner kick at the 6:22 mark of the second half and the teams were scoreless until Gruen headed in a goal off a pass from Brix to tie the game at the 72:31 mark.

The game stayed tied 2-2 for the final 7 minutes and the 10-minute first overtime.

Kassi Todryk had 10 saves in goal for the Tigers, who fall to 2-7-1 and 0-4 in the Wisconsin Valley Conference. Rhinelander improves to 2-1 in the Valley.

“We played with a lot more enthusiasm in the second half and were challenging and winning punted balls and the goal kicks after being too passive early on,” Marshfield assistant coach Steve Lindner said.

Marshfield is back in action Tuesday night at D.C. Everest and hosts Medford next Friday, April 30.
