Columbus tennis downs Phillips

PHILLIPS – The Marshfield Columbus Catholic boys tennis team won three of the four singles matches and two doubles matches to beat Phillips 5-2 in a dual meet Monday.

Chris Lamermayer needed a tiebreaker to win his No. 1 singles match for the Dons, beating Ben Ertl 6-3, 5-7, 7-6 (7-4).

Lucas Michalik at No. 3 singles and Matt Draxler at No. 4 had easier times of it for Columbus. Michalik beat Riley Langfass 6-1, 6-0, and Draxler topped Billy Steinke 7-5, 6-1.

The No. 3 doubles team of Joe Vaske and Augie Viegut also needed three sets to win its match for the Dons 6-4, 5-7, 6-4.

Columbus lost a match last Friday at Lakeland 5-2.

Vaske and Viegut won at No. 3 doubles, and the No. 2 doubles team of Michael Schneider and Inigo Hormaza won the only matches for the Dons.

Columbus is back in action Tuesday at home vs. Wisconsin Rapids Assumption.
