Division 3 roundup: Stratford freshman Anthony Gliniecki loses in semifinals at WIAA State Individual Wrestling Tournament

MADISON – Stratford freshman Anthony Gliniecki and junior Dondrick Tackes have assured themselves of reaching the medal stand as Day 2 of the WIAA State Individual Wrestling Tournament wrapped up Friday.

Gliniecki defeated Jon Mudlaff of Random Lake 5-2 in a Division 3 106-pound quarterfinal Friday morning to move into the semifinals, where he lost 3-2 to Riley Lull (37-3) over Riverdale.

Gliniecki (36-9) moves on to the 106-pound consolation bracket and will wrestle La Crosse Aquinas’ Nick Burns (39-5) in a semifinal on Saturday morning. The winner moves into the third-place match, with the loser wrestling for fifth place later Saturday afternoon.

The other three local wrestlers taking part in the Division 3 quarterfinals on Friday were defeated and moved into the consolation bracket.

Tackes suffered just his second loss of the season, losing 7-6 to Austin Hoeg (32-2) of Greendale Martin Luther in a 195-pound quarterfinal.

Tackes (35-2) rebounded with a 7-0 victory over Brandon Wilcox (32-3) of Northwood/Solon Springs Friday afternoon to guarantee himself a medal. Tackes will wrestle in the consolation semifinals Saturday morning for a spot in the third-place match.

Stratford’s other quarterfinalist, Hunter Kauffman, was pinned in a 220-pound match by Cody Moon (29-1) of Laconia in 1:14.

Kauffman (37-6) was later eliminated, losing 5-1 to Sam Beschta (36-7) of Lena/St. Thomas/Aquinas in a consolation match Friday afternoon.

Spencer heavyweight Kyle Andreae lost in his 285-pound quarterfinal, dropping a 3-2 decision to Alex Lennartson (43-1) of Unity.

Andreae also was eliminated from the tournament, losing to C.J. Pillath (28-18) of Coleman 2-1 in overtime in the consolation bracket. Andreae finishes his senior season with a 45-4 record.
