MARSHFIELD – Taylor Varsho scored 21 points and Marshfield used a suffocating defensive performance to overwhelm Wausau East 49-16 in Wisconsin Valley Conference girls basketball action Tuesday at Marshfield High School.

The Tigers held East to just 30 field goal attempts and forced 25 turnovers in a dominating performance from start to finish.

Marshfield remains undefeated in the WVC at 5-0 and improves to 10-1 overall, while East falls to 1-11 and 0-4 in the Valley.

“We know we have play four quarters of defense and if we do that, we know we’ll be in every game no matter who we play,” Marshfield coach Heidi Michaelis said.

The Tigers left no doubt that playing on back-to-back nights would have no effect on them. Taylor Varsho scored nine points in the first quarter, six on layups following East misses or turnovers, as Marshfield surged to a 15-4 lead one day after whipping Merrill in a nonconference game.

The dominance continued as the Tigers finished off a 17-0 run by scoring 12 straight points in the second quarter. Andie Varsho scored consecutive hoops to close out the run before East’s Anna Bauman hit a 3-pointer right before the buzzer and Marshfield led 27-7 at halftime.

Marshfield put the game out of reach, scoring the first 10 points of the third quarter as Taylor Varsho and Kelsey Weigel each had four points to open up a 30-point lead for the Tigers.

Weigel and Eleni Seitz each finished with eight points and Andi Varsho had six points and a team-high seven rebounds for the Tigers.

“Coach came in the lockerroom before the game started and said we needed to get a run going to start this game and there was no letdowns,” Taylor Varsho said.

Marshfield plays a nonconference game at Ashwaubenon on Saturday and returns to Valley action Jan. 29 at home against Wisconsin Rapids.
